Town Tip Tuesday: Comanche, OK
Last month we added to the Featured Town of the Month series by sharing interesting facts, hidden gems and more every Tuesday in our Town Tip Tuesday feature.
This month I’m excited to tell you about the community-driven town with a musical flare: Comanche, OK.
Since 2007, Allen Wooten, the Cowboy Opry and Music Store owner, has hosted a live music jamboree every Thursday night in the back of his store. Over time, the Cowboy Opry turned into a community dinner. Each week before the live music kicks off, anyone and everyone is welcomed in as a family to feast on a potluck dinner.
This past Thursday night, I had the honor of attending the festivities. First things first, I have to tell you about the food. I had some of the best-sliced brisket and potato salad I’ve ever eaten. (My mouth is watering right now as I’m thinking about how good it was.)
After a great conversation with the locals, it was time for the music to get started. My description of the Cowboy Opry jamboree doesn’t even do it justice. Trust me. You have to see it for yourself. This event is THE definition of a hidden gem.
Musicians from far and wide come to the Thursday night opry to strum, hum and sing along with the music. All the musicians take a seat on the stage and bring any songs they’d like to play.
From Johnny Cash to Josh Turner, the music will have your toes tapping, and quite frankly, it’s hard not to get up and dance. Have a song you’d like to request? They’ll play it!
Whether you’re a musician or just enjoy live music, mark your calendars for one Thursday evening to make the trip to Comanche, OK, to the Cowboy Opry. Take my word for it—once you visit, you’ll be itching to make a return.
