My Nature Hike In The Chickasaw National Recreation Area
Growing up in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, the Tall Grass Prairie was basically my backyard. A little known fact - Pawhuska has five times as many cows as people and three times as many buffalo as people. With all of that said, you would think I would be accustomed to seeing buffalo. I thought that, too, until my recent nature hike through the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur, Oklahoma.
I laced up my tennis shoes that morning looking for adventure. It’s not everyday that tennis shoes are my footwear of choice. This day was perfect for hiking with temps in the mid 60’s and a light wind. I was looking for fall foliage, but I found more than I would have ever expected. As I made my way into the National Recreation Area I was greeted with leaves changing into bold and vibrant fall colors. It is such a site to see, it will leave you breathless looking for the right words to describe it.
Adventure time, off to the trails to get some fresh air and spend some quality time with Mother Nature; we are old friends, we go way back. I look to my left and what I do see? That’s right, buffalo! The only thing that is standing between us is a fence. I have never been so close to that many buffalo in my entire life. They were out enjoying the beautiful fall day too. Some of them were being lazy and just hanging out, others were grazing having some breakfast.
I was so excited to be so close to them, it didn’t seem to faze them at all. They went on about their business while I snapped photos. Who knew buffalo were so chill?
Spending time outdoors is something I love to do. Honestly, I find it therapeutic to take a break from everything going on around me and just be. Be one with nature and unplug from everything. Its amazing how recharged you feel after some time outdoors. I hope you can find time to spend outdoors in Chickasaw Country soon. Happy trails my friends.
