Eagle Watching at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area
I will be the first to admit that I didn’t know that much about our nations symbol, the bald eagle. However, after last weekend, I feel like a champion of knowledge. If bald eagle facts were ever a category on Jeopardy or trivia night, I would walk away victorious!
Are you interested? Do you want to learn more? Let me share some of my eagle facts with you. For example:
- In Oklahoma, there are over 100 pairs of nesting Bald Eagles.
- When Bald Eagles mate, they mate for life.
- They also return to the same nest year after year.
- The female Bald Eagle is larger than the male.
- Females have a wingspan of 7-8 feet.
With all of that said—you are probably wondering where all of this came from. I had the chance to go Bald Eagle watching at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Finally, I am able to mark something off of my bucket list! There is still time for you to go, they will be hosting another guided watch this Saturday.
There are a few things you need to know:
Hear me out; I do not consider myself to be a professional bird watcher. That is what the rangers are there for. They are there to help spot the birds and guide you in the right direction. My eagle-watching group was huge—it must have been the gorgeous weather. There were people from Texas and Oklahoma, everyone trying to get a glimpse of the majestic bird. That morning we spotted a mature and immature bald eagle. Not gonna lie, when I saw them in my binoculars, I felt such a sense of pride. If you have never seen an Eagle before, it’s a unique feeling.
Round up your hand warmers, binoculars and friends for an Eagle-watching trip you will never forget!
