Get Back to your Roots
The first thing that comes to mind when I think about Chickasaw Country, besides the wonderful people is the beautiful country it gets to call home! Stretching over 13 Oklahoma countries, there's plenty of nature to explore!
You could almost say getting back in touch with the great outdoors is our specialty, and we can't help but tell you about it!
Visiting the Lake Murray Nature Center is a great way to dip your toe back into nature. Stop in to learn about the Lake Murray Landscape and the area's history. The views aren't too shabby, either!
Continue your way north to the Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery! Established in 1929, this unit of the US Fish and Wildlife Service feeds into Pennington Creek and is a perfect way to view aquariums of native Oklahoma fish, aquatic ecosystem displays. Bonus: you can fish, hike and see a functioning wooden water wheel!
Not far from Tishomingo is the Boggy Depot State Park in Atoka! The park is on the National Register of Historic Places because of its ties to the Civil War. Not only is it rich in history, but it's also rich in fun. A lake for fishing, nature trails, and campsites, it makes for a perfect day (or weekend) outdoors!
As you make your way north, the Chickasaw National Recreation Area is a must to get back in touch with nature. Even better, they're offering a Great Outdoor Workshop on March 18! Learn about tracking animals, naturescaping, and the ever-popular bird watching. If you can't make it out to the workshop, be sure to stop at the Travertine Center!
If you're looking for a little thrill outdoors, Crossbar Ranch in Davis is the place for you! With 6,500 acres of trails for your ATV or off-roading vehicle, you'll find areas completely untouched by human hands! If you like to take it a little slower, they have 3,000 acres for horse and mountain bike riding.
As the weather warms up, I hope you find yourself itching to get back outside, packing your car up and enjoying the fresh Chickasaw Country air! As always, don't forget to share your adventures in Chickasaw Country using #VisitChickasaw, and you could be featured!
Talk to you later, nature lovers!
