Day At The Museum
“Museums are managers of consciousness. They give us an interpretation of history, of how to view the world and locate ourselves in it.” – Hans Haacke
When I was young, my favorite field trips were when we went to the hands-on museums. Playing with static electricity, climbing into the cockpit of a decommissioned army helicopter or stepping inside a giant bubble are just a few of my favorite memories from our class trips to museums. It is because of these trips that I gained such an interest for science, history and culture.
With National Museum Day coming up on May 18, it got me thinking: when was the last time I spent time inside a museum?
We often don’t realize the incredible resources we have at the museums right under our nose here in Chickasaw Country. You can explore the life of pioneers at the Love Country Pioneer Museum in Marietta. You can peruse more than 110 years of banking history at the First State Bank Museum in Elmore City. You can even brush up on your knowledge of one of the oldest trades in known civilization at the National Museum of Horse Shoeing Tools in Sulphur!
If you need a place to start, try the Chickasaw Cultural Center. Located just southwest of downtown Sulphur, the Cultural Center is home to Holisso: The Center for Study of Chickasaw History and Culture. You can also experience some of your favorite films like you’ve never seen them in the 350-seat Anoli’ Theater!
I encourage you to get out there and discover something new on May 18 to celebrate National Museum Day!
