Chickasaw National Capitol Building
Tishomingo, Okla., is the largest city in Johnston County, Oklahoma. Main Street is an attraction photographers would use and probably have used as the subject for many photographs. Luckily, I could make a trip on a beautiful day before spring storms arrived!
Purely out of curiosity, my research confirmed this small town is home to around three thousand residents. So why would I take a day trip to visit this little town? Culture. I'm searching for culture, history and adventure, and Tishomingo is precisely where I needed to be.
You'll find the Chickasaw National Capitol Building in the heart of this wonderful community. Please take this warning to heart: this building is breathtaking when cast upon a backdrop of a typical Oklahoma sky and grounded with the promise of springtime in this great state.
Yes, I took this photo. Would it surprise you if, after wiping a little makeup off the screen, I sighed, thinking, "not half bad"?
The day I decided to explore a gothic-style building built of red granite from the Pennington Creek quarry of Governor R.M. Harris, I didn't realize my tour would be led by the incredible Donna Webb, who happens to be the curator for the facilities. When exploring, I try to keep my job under wraps, per se. This way, my experience will be one of authentic nature. (I wouldn't want to lead you astray, friends.)
Ms. Webb cares immensely about the Capitol Building and the history and culture intertwined into the 8,000-square-foot historical building. Her stories reach more profound than the descriptions on the exhibit floor. The exhibit floor, by the way, focuses on the Chickasaw government history from 1856-1907.
Of course, you could stay at home, safe in the comfort of your own living room, and learn about history via the Internet or history channel of choice; however, true adventures begin by exploring, and I can't think of a better place than Chickasaw Country.
