Town History:
The townsite of Wynnewood began in 1886 as a small settlement in Indian Territory near the Washita River, previously known as Cherokee Town. The community was originally named “Walner” after its founding father John Walner, a merchant who opened the first store after hearing plans of the incoming railroad. With the institution of the Gulf, Colorado and Sante Fe Railroad in the spring of 1887, the town rapidly transformed from a "tent city" into a thriving town. It was later renamed “Wynnewood” by the residential railroad men, after their hometown in Pennsylvania. Even today, many of the first town buildings such as the hotel, bank and shops still stand in the downtown area, giving us a present glimpse into Wynnewood’s historic past.

Constructed in 1899 and designed by local architect A.J. Barrett, the Moore-Settle House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Although the historic home allows drive-by viewing only, the sight itself is an awe-inspiring must-see with its Queen Anne style architecture, two horse-head hitching posts and brick walkways stamped with "CHANDLER O.T.", dating prior to Oklahoma's statehood in 1907.
Historical Trail Mark #2: The Eskridge Hotel Museum
Built in 1907 by a travelling cotton salesman or "drummer" named Pinckney Reid Eskridge, The Eskridge Hotel was once considered the finest hotel between Oklahoma City and Dallas. The Eskridge was famous for its fine southern hospitality as well as its legendary comfort food cuisine, especially the chicken dinners. Converted into a museum in the mid 1900s, today guests can tour the old hotel, perusing an intriguing array of themed displays in rooms like the Funeral Parlor, Carr Chapel, Barber Shop, Old Kitchen, Great Armed Forces Room, Black History Room and Native American Heritage Room. But be on the lookout - it's said that some of the original guests may still be lurking around!
