Savor the Summer
Today is the day! Summer is finally here, and I could not be more excited! Summer has always been my favorite time of year. Growing up, I remember spending hours playing outside with my siblings running through the sprinkler, riding our bikes or going for a swim!
When I was around 7 years old, I remember sitting on the back porch, being upset with my mom because I wasn’t old enough to do something my older sisters were doing. I did not understand what was so awesome about being little. I wanted to grow up so badly! My mom, being the wise lady she is, said one day I would miss being little. She said something about how time goes by slowly when you’re young, but it seems to speed up as you grow older. And boy, was she right! Growing up, it seemed like the days would drag on and on, but now time is flying by so fast. So this year, I want to savor the summer and help you do the same!
Here are my favorite parts of summer that I plan to savor and hope you do too!
Adventures
Summer is staying up late with your friends watching a movie outside. It’s life chats by the fire pit eating s’mores and roasting hotdogs. It’s deciding last minute to take a weekend trip to your favorite state park, Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It’s spending the evening at the baseball park and catching a foul ball! It’s being spontaneous and making the days count.
People
Summer is spending time with your favorite people. It’s backyard barbeques and birthday celebrations. It’s 4th of July parades and Labor Day camping trips. It’s meeting new friends and catching up with old friends on the weekend. It’s big smiles and lots and lots of laughter!
Road Trips
Summer is singing at the top of your lungs with the windows rolled down while driving down a back road. It’s jumping in the car and driving hours with your family or friends for a weekend getaway. It’s finding cool landmarks and taking selfies. It’s checking off places from your bucket list. It’s road trips through Chickasaw Country eating fried pies at the fabulous Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies!
Local Festivals
Summer is eating a snow cone at a local fair. It’s spending a summer night playing carnival games, eating a funnel cake and listening to great red dirt music. It’s hometown traditions and seeing a familiar face that you haven’t seen in a while. It’s fireworks, Ferris wheels and fireflies. You can find all of the festivals here.
Water
Summer is lying by the pool all day, reading a book and eating ice cream. It’s finding just the right fishing hole and catching the biggest fish you've ever caught. It’s jumping in cold water on a hot Oklahoma day. It's lots of sunshine and even more sunscreen.
Make the days count, and savor each second of the summer! I know I will! Make sure to share your summer adventures with me on social media by using the hashtag #VisitChickasaw.
Happy summer,
Kalli
