Celebrate National Bike Month in Chickasaw Country
When I was a little kid, my Grammy and I would ride our bicycles every afternoon to pick up my two older sisters from school. We would ride a few blocks, wait on a bench outside of the school, and after a few minutes, my sisters would come running. I spent a lot of summer days racing my sisters on my bike and riding around my Grammy’s driveway.
When I think of summer activities, I always think of that time in my life. Being carefree, eating ice cream and riding my bike. What better way to kick off summer than by celebrating National Bike Month and reminiscing about past summer days? Grab a helmet, jump on your bike and tag along as we explore Chickasaw Country’s bikes and trails.
If you are looking for the perfect place to enjoy nature and exercise, go biking in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The CNRA has more than 30 miles of trails and all allow bikers except for the trail behind the Travertine Nature Center. While biking, you can see some of the best viewpoints! The trails are very accessible, and there are different trails for riders with different abilities. One fun trail is a 3-mile paved trail around Veterans Lake at the CNRA. The trail offers a beautiful view of the lake and is easy to access. The most accessible trail for bikers is a four-mile Rock Creek trail. It starts at the Cedar Blue Road and ends near Veterans Lake.
The perfect time to go for a ride is in the morning or around twilight. If you do go for a bike ride during the heat of the day, remember to drink lots of water! Always watch for traffic and be aware of your surroundings.
If you don’t own a bike, that’s totally fine! You can rent a bike at the Chickasaw Visitor’s Center in Sulphur. This makes it extremely easy to go biking around the CNRA or the town of Sulphur. Go to the kiosk on the south side of the Visitor’s Center and use your credit or debit card. It costs $5 for the first hour and $3 for additional half hours.
Enjoy the beautiful weather and go for a bike ride! You can bike to work, school, or simply explore a community! Biking helps your health, saves money and helps the environment! Not to mention, biking always brings back childhood memories!
Happy trails,
Kalli
