Bob's Pig Shop: A Lunch Spot for Champions.

We’ve already established my heart beats a little faster when barbecue is mentioned as a dining option, and a little faster still if this barbecue is located in one of Oklahoma’s historical towns.

Naturally, when the stars align, my internal navigation system directs my path – my stomach leading the way. This is exactly why I sat in front of Pauls Valley’s Bob’s Pig Shop.

Let’s set the stage a little:

I’ve heard about this place multiple times while traveling through Chickasaw Country, so my expectations were extremely high. Again, for the sake of transparency, in my life before traveling Chickasaw Country, I was the Director of Promotions at the Oklahoma Pork Council. This information alone should lead you to believe I know a thing to two about barbecue, and even if I don’t, my taste buds are convinced I do.

That friends is the Pig Sandwich. It’s the same one they’ve been making since they opened the doors in 1933, so naturally it’s what I ordered. Topped with what I can only describe as perfection and served with beans and pickle, there’s no question why this is a fan favorite.

Yes, they’ve been open since ’33. The building has changed a little and, naturally, Bob and Helen Hammons aren’t running the kitchen anymore, but the essence of the thriving Pig Shop that opened during the mist of the Great Depression was still present.

A lot of people ask how I travel solo. My first response it, "I just get in my car and go."

The truth is that I make friends.

For instance, I inhaled this mouth-watering pork heaven while sitting at the counter watching Sports Center with the regulars. We talked about college football, the Pauls Valley Noodling Festival and agriculture. I guess the true answer is "blend."

The next time you’re in Pauls Valley, you should put Bob’s Pig Shop on your radar – you won’t be disappointed.
